What is Religious Trauma ?

Religious trauma instills the message that life is basically bad and you are sinful and wrong.  If you are raised in an oppressive religious culture your brain develops under the constant state of fear/penance. The message that you are made wrong sets you up for confusion and mistrust of yourself which can lead to debilitating low self esteem.

Religious trauma makes you fearful of yourself, and confuses your relationship to love and attachment. Even after you have moved away from the abusive religion your mind will need to consciously unlearn thought patterns so you no longer default to living in a heightened state of anxiety.

Recovering from religious trauma does not require losing God. It requires reclaiming the thought power that is rightfully yours and moving forward confidently.
